Standby letter
A letter of credit issued by a bank but which is intended to be secondary of credit in function (like a guarantee).
It is intended to be used as a fall-back if there is a payment default under a specified instrument such as a loan agreement.
A beneficiary of this arrangement is able to make a drawing on the letter of credit merely by providing a certificate of non-payment of the underlying debt.
